This subject came up among several friends at work. What is the strongest substance in the Marvel Universe? I cant remember all of the things which were brought up and said to be the strongest substance there was but here are a few. Can Wolverine's calws penetrate Captain America's Shield? Can Wolverine's claws penetrate the thing? Where does Thor's hammer fit in? What about Silver Surfer's board? I know Superman isnt Marvel but he was also brought up. I think you get the idea. Basicaly, what is the last thing to give weather it be part of a hero's body or a weapon or whatever?

Captain America's shield is actually partly made of adamantium. It is also made from some kind of meteor that I don't recall what it was. In the Ultimate Avengers movie it's suppossed to be adamantium and vibranium. The stuff the Black Panther uses. Wolverines claws can't cut through it. I read somewhere, I don't remember where, a listing of indestructable objects in the marvel universe. Cap's shield was one of them. Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, was another. I think the infinity gauntlet was another. I think they are all tougher than anybody's skin. Unless Absorbing Man absorbed Cap's shield or something. I don't know. They have way too many stories and heroes to remember everything. Isn't Ultron made from adamantium?

Yeah, Ultron's adamantium. Hercules's mace is also supposed to be pretty hard.

Adamantium is the hardest Earth based substance. Thor's hammer is Uru metal, made in Asgard and is also unbreakable. Surfers board is strong, but I think it can be broken.
Wolverine can't cut Caps shield because it's a adamantium/vibraium alloy making it unbreakable and absorbs energy, allowing him to take a blow from the Hulk and barely feel a tingle. Wolverine can penetrate Things hide and has done it a few times.

Wolverine has also been known to leave scratches in Colossus's organic metal skin as well.
But yeah Admantium is the hardest earth based substance, harder than vibranium, which can absorb energy but against adamantium can still break.

Yeah, I'd have to limit it to earth based substances, which Adamantium would fall under. As mentioned before, vibranium is mostly used for its absorbtion and molecular capabilities, which is why Reed Richards made beacons out of it, causing everyone to gain superpowers in EarthX. As far as the strongest substance in the universe...who knows, Thors hammer is unbreakable and has the advantage of having magical/god qualities that normal earth substances don't.

The Surfer's board is composed of a nearly impervious, cosmically powered silvery material that is similar to his own skin. The board is mentally linked to the Surfer and moves in response to his mental commands even when he is not in physical contact with it. The board is nigh indestructible, but on those rare occasions when it is damaged or destroyed, the Surfer is able to repair or even recreate it with little effort. The Surfer can attack opponents remotely by directing the board against them, and the board is capable of absorbing and imprisoning other beings, at least temporarily.

Well according to Marvel Captain America's Shield was an accidently binding of Vibranium and True Adamantium therefore making it the strongest metal on earth and the effect has never been duplicated. Thor's hammer is made of Asgardian Uru and enchanted by Odin himself therefore making it one of the strongest metals in the universe. Silver Surfer's surfboard was made by the world devouring Galactus and is therefore almost indestructable.
I don't know if any of you guys used to play the old TSR Marvel Superheroes RPG or not, but in game terms True Adamantium such as Wolverine's claws and Ultron's body was made of a Class 1000 material which could effectively survive a nuclear blast (not wolvie himself but his skeleton) Cap's shield, Thor's hammer, and Silver Surfer's surfboard were all made of Class 3000 material which virtually means they are indestructable through ordinary means.
Also Wolverine's claws can cut through any material that is less than his adamantium claws depending on its thickness, so no he couldn't cut through Cap's shield, Thor's hammer, or Silver Surfer's surfboard. But Iron Man's armor, the Thing's rocky hide, nor the Hulk's diamond hard skin is no match for Wolvie's claws.

This becomes confusing because a few days ago I read that adamantium was created in a failed attempt to duplicate Cap's shield. I also read that the only way to destroy his shield is to tamper with it's make up scientifically. I even read that Thor's hammer was broken once. I guess it all depends on your source.

To answer my own question: yes, yes he did. BUT he didn't break the adamantium.

yes wolerine fan.i use to own that game but that has been along time ago.i havent even seen it in like 18 or 19 years.as you know comics change over time.{strength,speed.etc..}so using such an old reference for modern day comics probably isnt a good idea to determine power levels and such.on a personal note i was looking for that game for my kids who love comics.just coundn't find it
